Marcus Luttrell

Marcus Luttrell, Decorated Navy SEAL & Best-Selling Author of Lone Survivor
Marcus Luttrell joined the U.S. Navy in 1999 and became a combat-trained SEAL in 2002. After serving in Iraq for two years, he was deployed to Afghanistan and assigned to Operation Redwing, whose mission was to gather intelligence on a Taliban leader with ties to Osama bin Laden.

His four-man team was ambushed by a large Taliban force on a remote ridge. After fighting for hours, and Marcus being blown off the mountain by an RPG, he eventually watched all three friends and 16 special operation forces in a rescue helicopter get killed. Marcus crawled through the mountains in search of shelter, and Afghan villagers took Marcus in at the risk of their own lives. Honoring their tribe’s custom, they protected him from the Taliban and ended up finding help at a nearby Marine outpost. Five nights after the nightmare began, Marcus Luttrell was rescued.

After recuperating from his ordeal, Marcus redeployed to Iraq for a second tour. In 2007, Petty Officer 1st Class Luttrell retired and was awarded the Navy Cross for combat heroism in 2006 by President George W. Bush.

His #1 New York Times best-selling book, “Lone Survivor,” tells this harrowing story.
