His four-man team was ambushed by a large Taliban force on a remote ridge. After fighting for hours, and Marcus being blown off the mountain by an RPG, he eventually watched all three friends and 16 special operation forces in a rescue helicopter get killed. Marcus crawled through the mountains in search of shelter, and Afghan villagers took Marcus in at the risk of their own lives. Honoring their tribe’s custom, they protected him from the Taliban and ended up finding help at a nearby Marine outpost. Five nights after the nightmare began, Marcus Luttrell was rescued.
After recuperating from his ordeal, Marcus redeployed to Iraq for a second tour. In 2007, Petty Officer 1st Class Luttrell retired and was awarded the Navy Cross for combat heroism in 2006 by President George W. Bush.
His #1 New York Times best-selling book, “Lone Survivor,” tells this harrowing story. An unparalleled motivational story of survival, and a moving tribute to the friends and teammates who did not make it off the mountain, the book is a powerful testament to the courage, integrity, patriotism and community that forged these American heroes.
In 2014, Luttrell’s amazing story made the leap to the big screen with the blockbuster film, Lone Survivor. The film celebrated a historic opening, earning the second biggest January debut of all time.
His new bestselling book, “Service: A Navy SEAL at War,” delves into the nature of service on America’s battlefields and the soldiers who give their lives to defend their nation and each other. To honor his lost comrades from Operation Redwing, Marcus Luttrell established the Lone Survivor Foundation in 2010, dedicated to honoring and remembering American warriors by providing unique educational, rehabilitation, recovery, and wellness opportunities to the U.S. Armed Forces service members and families.
